“Cummings’s first offering for middle graders and middle schoolers is suspenseful and well-paced, striking a solid balance between ghost story and school story past and present.” - The Horn Book Readers will appreciate that Trace’s project is ultimately a success, whether it’s truly academic or emotional, but the journey is an important one.” - Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books “Cummings marries a chillingly gothic tone to the palpable realism of Trace’s reluctant therapy sessions, new-kid awkwardness, and mourning. “In her middle grade debut, Cummings (the Harvey Moon picture books) follows Trace’s progress as he begins to absolve himself from guilt about the accident, learn about his lineage, and understand his family’s position in history. “From its dramatic opening to its satisfying conclusion, this is an absorbing, multi-layered novel an excellent choice for all middle school collections.” - School Library Journal (starred review) Picking up the book in the shop, the blurb on the back hooked me. The version of this book that I was reading was a revised edition including element cut from earlier editions. It was good enough that it piqued my interest. I was already aware of Gaiman – although I haven’t read it yet, I have heard the radio play of Good Omens that he co-authored with Terry Pratchett – so when I heard there was also going to be a radio play of Neverwhere, I gave it a listen. And one of those was a curiosity-piquing book called Neverwhere, by an English fellow named Neil Gaiman. A little while back I had been on a mini shopping spree and came back with a few books, all ones I have heard recommended, but by authors I had not tried before. Not because I was bored of them, but because I felt like I needed to try something completely new. So I felt, as I sometimes do when reading longer book series, that I needed a change of pace from the Discworld. There’s London Above – that’s where you lived – and then there’s London Below – the Underside – inhabited by the people who fell through the cracks in the world. “Young man” he said, “understand this there are two Londons. The subsequent feelings of abandonment stayed with Angelou for years, but their reunion, a decade later, began a story that has never before been told. When her marriage began to crumble, Vivian famously sent three-year-old Maya and her older brother away from their California home to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. But now, at last, the legendary author shares the deepest personal story of her life: her relationship with her mother.įor the first time, Angelou reveals the triumphs and struggles of being the daughter of Vivian Baxter, an indomitable spirit whose petite size belied her larger-than-life presence-a presence absent during much of Angelou’s early life. The story of Maya Angelou’s extraordinary life has been chronicled in her multiple bestselling autobiographies. "The action-oriented plot mixed with scenes of a passionate romance between Ali and Cole-and a new way to look at zombies (by fighting them in spirit form)-will be certain to delight fans of paranormal fantasy." -VOYA Product Details Guilt, faith, and self-confidence." - Publishers Weekly Filled with hot action, true romance, real friendship and a unique twist on zombies, The White Rabbit Chronicles is not to be missed. The result is a zippy story with crossover Giddy focus on the push-and-pull attraction "Showalter has created a promising playground for future story installments." -Kirkus Reviews Despairing that nothing remains in heaven or earth of which he has not already dreamt, the scholar Faust sells his soul to Mephistopheles-the Devil’s messenger or guise-in exchange for knowledge and power. The legend of Faust is born of the Western ambivalence toward individual responsibility. In 2016, Mann’s depiction of swelling diabolism felt startlingly familiar. Set during the 1920s and ’30s in Germany, Doctor Faustus captures the arc of Hitler’s rise to power. Far from coincidence, this misattribution reflects Mann’s ability to cross the boundaries of time. During the Nuremberg Trials, the Chief Prosecutor for the UK quoted as authentic words from the fictional Goethe of Mann’s Lotte in Weimar (1939). I am not the first to have confused the two authors. I’d bought the book by mistake several years prior, thinking it was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s version-that is, the seminal German Faust. I began reading Thomas Mann’s Doctor Faustus: The Life of the German Composer Adrian Leverkühn, as Told by a Friend (1947), in mid-2016, casually. Mattie might not care for William’s approval, but she certainly knows that she must avoid his rage–William’s caprice is often accompanied by blows that leave Mattie bruised and bloodied, for even the smallest provocations. Mattie knows that she is a bad wife because she continually disappoints William–she woolgathers, she’s clumsy, and most importantly, she hasn’t been able to bear him a son (though she performs her wifely duty every night). Her husband, William, is not a patient man, nor is he kind. On a winter’s day like so many others, Mattie awakens and goes about her chores. Terrible things happen when William is angry.ĬW: implication of rape, child abuse, and other abuse Review When three strangers appear on the mountaintop looking for the creature in the woods, Mattie knows their presence will anger William. There’s something in the woods that wasn’t there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws. But when Mattie discovers the mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they’re not alone after all. Mattie can’t remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together. A woman trapped on a mountain attempts to survive more than one kind of monster, in a dread-inducing horror novel from the national bestselling author Christina Henry. They are joined by two other characters, one being David Caravaggio, a thief and a long-time friend of Hana’s father and the other being Kip, a bomb disposal expert who volunteers to try and clear the villa of unexploded ordnance. She sees him as saint-like and falls in love with his pure nature. When the hospital is abandoned, Hana resolutely refuses to leave, staying with her patient. She reads Herodotus’s The Histories to him, which is his only possession. She washes his wounds, she provides him with much needed morphine and she reads to him. From that moment on she invests all of her energy into caring for a severely burned man, the English Patient. When her father gets killed in action Hana has an emotional breakdown. Her boyfriend, a Canadian officer, is killed and Hana comes to believe that she is cursed and that those around her are doomed to die. During the Italian campaign Villa San Girolamo functioned as a military hospital and one of the nurses there is Canadian army nurse Hana. The story is set against the historical background of World War Two. In Elliot Lake, outspoken city councillor Chris Patrie is challenging Mayor Dan Marchisella, who is seeking a third term. And only three of eight councillors want to keep their jobs. Mayor Joanne Savage is not running again, but one of her main rivals, councillor Dan Roveda is seeking the top job, as are political newcomers Kathleen Thorne Rochon and Dave Lewington. Some of the races to watch elsewhere in the northeast include West Nipissing, where council in-fighting got so bad in the past year, the province had to step in. With George Pirie departing for provincial politics, Timmins voters will either choose city councillor Michelle Boileau or businessman Rick Lafleur as their new mayor in October.
